Prevalence of alcohol use disorders before and after bariatric surgery. - 09-25-2012

Researchers found that the prevalence of Alcohol use disorders (AUD) was greater in the second year following surgery than prior to surgery or in the first year following surgery. Based on these findings, the researchers recommend educating patients about the potential effects of bariatric surgery to increase the risk of AUD. Additionally, alcohol screening and, if indicated, referral should be incorporated into routine preoperative and postoperative clinical care.
